Burger Project launches in Brisbane
This was an exciting time for me. Yes, I love burgers.. but this, this was competition.. and possibly the push Brisbane needed to up it's saturated burger scene. If you've been to Sydney, you'll know what I mean. That is a burger scene that is fierce in competition to only keep the burgers incredible :)
Not gonna lie.. the thought of taking the day off and waiting for 11am was in my head more than once. But thankfully, I finished at 1pm so I was able to get there just after the lunch rush (read as: I was able to get a seat and avoid that massive crowd :P ).
I never seen Neil Perry in person, but I was told he had a pony tail.. and by that description was all I needed to spot him arrival. But he wasn't being a poster boy, or just blending into the background. This guy was slicing buns, helping the kitchen. cleaning, and picking up rubbish.. you know, actually being useful. Him being there on opening day meant a lot, always a good sign seeing the creator at a new venue's launch.
Now for the goods.
My first trip:
x1 Bacon Project
x1 Blueberry Pie Cup (so perfect)
ok, so it was the first day.. and I expected little bit of quality loss. And the beef showed this, slightly burnt bits attached to the edges and just dry. But apart from that, I really loved the freshness of the other ingredients. Nothing seemed cheap, but just quality.. and that in itself, is a huge achievement :)
The dessert.. my god, it was like falling in love in first sight.
Truly, just seeing the vanilla beans made me want to eat it.. but in all honesty, the blueberry part is the main reason I bought this. It did not disappoint.. the ice cream pure, smooth and insanely delicious. Blueberries, vanilla bean ice cream, and crumble. The perfect match.
Trip 2:
x1 Double
x1 Spicy Fried Chicken Katsu
Ok, so first.. please adjust your attention to the meat pattie. Notice the sizable difference? ;)
Yes, it was so much better than day one. Juicy, premium Cape Grim beef in all its non-seasoned glory. Little salt wouldn't hurt.. but I love that there isn't any additions to the beef. All the ingredients were just as incredible as before.
The chicken, super crumbed.. locking in a succulent chicken. It's crazy that underneath all that crumb is a chicken so nice. I'm not the largest fan of Katsu sauce.. but the flavors were strong and it had a nice spicy kick. An interesting twist to the usual fried chicken, and not oily :)
So, do I recommend this place?
Is a question I've been asked a lot since opening day.
Yes, I do. This place packs a great menu.. with incredible value. Their most expensive burgers are $13.90 and use nice ingredients. Also the dessert menu alone, is a reason to come.
So, don't just take my word for it.. give it a shot. The current one is located in South Bank, with the new one coming later in the year to Mary Street in the CBD ( and later to Chermside).
